What is the origin of ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss?
This variety was co-developed by UC Davis and UC Riverside turfgrass researchers and was patented in 2003. It is just now becoming known to the landscape industry as a viable and sustainable alternative lawn for our state.

Are there other varieties of buffalograss suitable for California?
The quotes around ‘UC Verde’ ® mean that it is a named cultivar, or selection of buffalograss. There are numerous other forms of buffalograss that come from the Great Plains states, but these have not performed well in our state. ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss is THE ONLY buffalograss that was bred in California for California’s unique climate.

What are the benefits of ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss?
Cut your lawn water use by as much as 75% with this cultivar. Mowing requirement will be reduced by as much as half, and this tough grass is nearly pest and disease-free, meaning very little need for insecticides and fungicides.

The very low pollen requirement means this is an allergy-friendly turf. ‘UC Verde’ ® is a fine bladed, soft textured grass, making it perfect for play and for picnics.

When is the best time to plant ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss?
April through August are best because ‘UC Verde’ ® fills in quickly with warmer weather...hot weather is fine! Plantings may go in any other time of year, but will require more time to establish.

Inland plantings during warm weather will fill in in as little as 4 to 6 weeks from planting date; coastal plantings will take several weeks longer (10-12 weeks in warm weather).

What is the mowing requirement for ‘UC Verde’ ®?
Buffalograss has a slow vertical growth habit; ‘UC Verde’ ® will grow to a height of 4 to 6”. Optimal mow height for water conservation is 2 to 3”. ‘UC Verde’ also looks very good as a short meadow grass, and may be left un-mowed for this purpose.

Does ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss go dormant?
For much of southern California, ‘UC Verde’ ® is semi-dormant from early December to mid - February. During that time it will lose color, becoming straw-green in color. This dormancy period may be accepted as a natural time for this grass (and you!) to rest, but there are options to keep the green look year round, including use of an organic turf colorant, or over-seeding of a short season annual grass.

What is the irrigation requirement for ‘UC Verde’ ®?
Following planting, ‘UC Verde’ ® should be watered enough so that the plugs do not dry out; frequency of watering in establishment period will depend upon weather and soil type. Remember that this is a very drought tolerant grass, but it must be allowed to get its roots down into your garden soil first!

Water lawn regularly until the grass has filled in and been established. Not enough water will be characterized by purple-tipped leaf blades; over-watering by a boggy soil. Once the roots are out into your garden soil (typically 3-4 weeks from planting), begin watering less often, but for a longer cycle; this will drive the roots even deeper. Of course during the winter, the water requirement will be less to nil, depending upon rainfall.

SEE Establishing ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss.pdf guidelines for more detail.

How can I buy ‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss?
As a female-sterile grass, ‘UC Verde’ ® does not reproduce from seed (the reason that the pollen count is so low). We provide ‘UC Verde’ ® in plugs, both in 128 and 72 tray sizes. The 128 plug dimensions are is 1-1/4” x 1-3/4” deep; the 72 tray is 1-3/4” x 2” deep, 72 plugs per tray.

Typical spacing for residential plantings is 12” on center. For faster fill-in, plugs may be planted on 9”, and even 6” centers. For large projects such as parks, green belts, and slopes, spacing may be increased to 15” and even 18” centers, though fill-in time will take longer at these spacings.

How will my order ship to me?
Smaller orders are shipped in our custom box and larger orders are shrink-wrapped and shipped on a pallet with our custom tray holders. Shipping is via OnTrac to your door. For large orders, customer pick up is also available at our production partner’s facility in Fresno, California.
